Markland Wood | Community Established in 1960

President's Update

Hi everyone!

We hope this reaches you after having had a happy Holiday Season. May 2017 be the best yet. There are a few issues about which I want to bring you up to date.

First of all, a major Independent Toronto Airspace Review (ITAR)) of the operations (day & night) of Pearson Airport has been initiated by Navigation Canada (Nav CANADA) and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA). Engaged has been HELIOS, a British aerospace consulting firm based in Farnborough, England. As I indicated in an earlier Marklander, your MWHA has had a subcommittee following GTAA/Pearson operations for decades, and it is this same subcommittee that submitted on December 29, 2016 an MWHA ‘position paper’, under my signature, to HELIOS and the Review panel. It is for this reason that our paper focuses on the ‘Terms of Reference’ (ToR) of the Review, i.e. what should be studied. We anticipate that after this study, the next review to examine Pearson airport needs looks to be about 2025, a decade or so away. So, if we do not insist on some model of night noise control now, such as we enjoyed under the original 1997 agreement under the then Minister of Transport’s signature, to protect our quality of life and health and that of our children, who will?
