Richard Boehnke, MHA
Environmental Committee Chair
Special
Note from Richard Boehnke:
At
the April 21, 2007 Renforth Creek Clean-Up there was
enthusiastic reception at Markland Wood becoming an even
more active home for wildlife than we already are.
There was good support for adding both bat houses and
bird boxes to our dwelling opportunities. We
would like to get some idea of how many Marklanders would
like to participate in a nesting box program for birds
and/or for bats on their own property.
Basic
bird nesting boxes and bat boxes would be available in some
number from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority
free of charge to residents who would allow identification
of their particular box(es) by GPS location and would
undertake or permit examination of the nest at season's end
to determine the species which used the home. We may
also be able to support the Boy Scouts in such a program
through purchase of similar bird nesting boxes.
Please
let Richard Boehnke know through this website, MHA_E-C(at)MarklandWood.org,
if you are interested in participating in such a program.
If
you would like to build a bird or bat house yourself, click

Some interesting facts about Compact
Fluorescent Lightbulbs or CFLs.
A 60W
incandescent bulb can be replaced by a 11W CFL
40 million 11W CFLs would save 2,000 MegaWatts of electricity.
It would cost 200 million dollars to give away 40 million CFLs.
Therefore it would cost 200 million dollars to save 2,000
MegaWatts of electricity.
Pickering A plant produces, when working, 515 MegaWatts of
electricity.
It will cost 1 billion dollars to produce 500 MW by other
means, eg: by fixing one of the “broken” nuclear plants.
In Ontario in 1999, the electricity demand due to lighting
alone was 5,000 MegaWatts.
Go figure!!
Now
there’s a chance to play your part and it won’t cost a
cent!
CFLs
This is an opportunity for all Markland Wood residents to make
a very small difference, but as you can see from the figures
above, if enough people go out and do the same, these small
differences quickly add up to something much more substantial.
Go make a difference!

Broadcast System
Over the years the MHA has wanted to get the
information out to our members as quickly as possible. To
keep you informed, many years ago the MHA invested in an
‘Auto-Dialer’ telephone systems that eventually became
outdated faster than Eight-Track-Tapes. Often the MHA has
sent a letter attached to the Marklander or even as a stand
a loan newsletter. Sometimes, news comes to us so quickly
that it is difficult to post on the website. There are many
meetings, events and public notifications that the MHA
thinks you should have access to. This is why we have set up
the “News From Markland Wood” email broadcast system.
You will have to be proactive and register by sending an
email with your Full Name, Address and Telephone Number to News@
MarklandWood.org.
We will cross-reference your information with the membership
database and if you are up-to-date, you will be included.
Your email address won’t be used for any other purposes.
Others will not see your email address as we will use Blind
Carbon Copy (Bcc:) field to send these email broadcast
messages. You will only receive one or two email per month and can be
removed from the email broadcast list at any time.
