President's Update

Anna Schaefer

Hello!

And the countdown begins.....to what you ask? To the start of summer (finally), to the end of another school year, to the day when my new puppy does his business outside. Yes, that’s right, we are dog owners as of four weeks ago and I must say I am still in denial! Archie is his name, and he is a cute little Yorkie. Stay tuned for more doggie enthusiasm in September...

On May 4th, Millwood Junior School celebrated their 50th Anniversary and from the sounds of it, it was a huge success. Over 600 people attended and our very own Bob Cooke was there challenging the audience with some historical Markland Wood trivia.

Although a little on the cooler side, our Annual Garage Sale took place on May 25th and as usual, the streets of Markland Wood were buzzing with deals and bargain hunters.

Markland Wood Youth Community Leadership Award

Community services performed by youth are intended to strengthen young peoples' senses of civic engagement and community, and to help them achieve their educational, developmental and social goals...

Community leaders will often attest to the necessity of engaging youth in deliberating, planning, implementing, and reflecting on their community service resulting in an enhanced learning experience.
It is with in mind that the Markland Wood Homes Association once again offers the
Youth Community Leadership Award to young residents of Markland who have
exhibited the community involvement and leadership the award was designed to
recognize.
The $1000 awards will be given to two students who are graduating from high
school. These are students from the Markland Wood community who:
1) Demonstrate outstanding and consistent outreach to their community; and,
2) Have been accepted for entrance to, and enrolled in, an accredited Canadian
University or Community College in the coming year.
Expressions of interest are to be submitted to the Blinder of the Youth Community
Leadership Award Committee by the 30th of June. At that time, the applicant should
provide to the Award Committee duplicate copies of:
a) An essay, written by the student (up to two typed pages), describing his/her
community leadership involvement which should include: insight into personal motivation
to undertake the activity; what has been accomplished; what meaningful contribution
has been made to the community, and what he or she has learned from the experience.
b) Two letters of support or confirmation from the community group(s), or individuals
who have been the focus of the student’s involvement.
c) A completed application form. The form can be found at www.marklandwood.org.
By July 31st, each applicant must provide a copy of his or her letter of acceptance
and enrolment in an accredited Canadian University or Community College.
