Markland Wood | Community Established in 1960

President's Update

Georgina Balascas

Hello Everyone,

As I am writing this update, I see the first real sign of winter: snow!! I am sure the skiers in our community are getting excited, but the golfers must be really upset that their season has come to an end. Although I don’t participate in either sport, I am not happy that winter is upon us! I am not looking forward to the cold and the long dark evenings, but at least we have much to look forward to.

The holidays are coming and soon the festive lights and decorations will be out in Markland Wood and we can enjoy their beauty as we walk or drive though our wonderful community. In addition, the annual Christmas Caravan is just around the corner happening on December 16th. Each year Markland Wood residents have an opportunity to share the spirit of Christmas with others who may not be as fortunate. We make our way through the community and we pick up your non-perishable food, gently used clothing or small furniture items. If you would like to join us, we meet at Markland Plaza at 8:45 a.m. that morning. I would love to see you there. So would Santa!

240 Markland Drive Condo-Townhouse Proposal

on Wednesday, 06 June 2018.

UPDATE: 240 Markland Drive Proposed Development

On June 6th, the Council Chambers at Etobicoke Civic Center was overflowing with Markland residents concerned about the status of the 240 Markland Drive rezoning proposal. Since 2011, four building proposal iterations were submitted by the developer. The City Planning department seemed to be satisfied that the latest revision was close to being compliant to the Official City Plan for Apartment Neighbourhoods. The Planning department crafted a positive report that they presented to City Council. They recommended the proposal be accepted for the property to be rezoned. Since the developer appealed the project to the Ontario Municipal Board in December 2017, this was a request for guidance from the City Planning Department to the City Council. The agenda was tabled for June 6th, where 11 Etobicoke/York City Councillors would accept or reject the Planning report to recommend a rezoning change.

Christmas Caravan 2017

MWHA Christmas Caravan 50th Anniversary!

To be able to celebrate any 50th Anniversary is very special and on December 10th, we celebrated that occasion for our annual Christmas Caravan! Who would have thought that a small community such as Markland Wood could continue its tradition of collecting food and clothing for local charities for all these years? Over the decades, we have seen many changes with many new volunteers. We have said goodbye to those that have moved away (even though some come back just for Caravan) and others that have passed away. As we met at the plaza, we took a moment to reflect.
